often very similar in weight, size and metallic content
to coins but which are not legal tender. Many coin
collectors are also token collectors as tokens have
much the same artistic and historical appeal as true coins.
Arcade Tokens - This
type of token includes video game tokens, amusement
tokens and other tokens that relate to entertainment
events or amusement centers.
Tradesman Tokens
- Various countries
have from time to time experienced shortages of coins
for various reasons. To address this shortage, merchants
in these countries commenced issuing metal tokens which
could be used as money in the particular locality of
issue. For example, in the 16th century, Canadian tokens
were issued by the Hudson's Bay Company in various denominations. |
